Lemuria & Mu
On islands all over the Pacific Ocean are ancient legends which tell of an influential continent now lost under the sea. This lost continent is thought to be the birthplace of Man, and was home to a highly advanced, spiritual race. This giant land mass was referred to as ‘Mu’ or ‘Lemuria’, and it connected southern India to Australia. The many rocky islands dispersed throughout the Pacific such as Easter Island, Samoa, Tahiti, and Hawaii are believed to be surviving remnants of this once great continent.
A prominent figure in publicizing these legends is Colonel James Churchward who wrote a series of publications about this lost continent. He said that while he was a soldier in India, he met a high-ranking priest who showed him ancient tablets in a long-lost, original language of Man. The priest claimed himself, and his two cousins were the only ones associated with a 70,000 year old esoteric order which originated on Mu known as the ‘Naacal Brotherhood’. The tablets described that Mu was a continent in the Pacific Ocean, just below the equator, and it was roughly 5,000 miles long and 3,000 miles wide. The tablets also stated that Mankind had appeared on Mu over 50,000 years ago, and it housed an advanced society of 64 million people with several cities before it was destroyed by a series of geological cataclysms.
Around the same period of time Churchward was publishing his legendary findings in the early 19th century, zoologists had a hard time explaining the distribution of animals such as the lemurs over large areas. The lemur is a relatively small primate found in Africa, Madagascar, and India. Some zoologists and naturalists suggested a land mass acted as a land bridge connected these countries together thousands of years ago. An English zoologist, Philip L. Schlater, presented the name Lemuria for this former land of Lemurs which was positioned in the Indian Ocean.
Another important figure in the Lemurian legend was Madame Elena Petrovna Blavatsky who was the founder of Theosophy in her book, The Secret Doctrine. She claims to have located her Lemuria through Sanskrit legends, where it existed in the Indian Ocean about 150 million years ago. She describes the Lemurians as being the third root race to inhabit planet earth and details them as egg-laying creatures with a third-eye that granted them psychic powers and the ability to function without a brain. As they were originally bisexual, their demise came after they discovered sex.
As the rise and demise of Mu and Lemuria can not be accurately documented, many have searched far and wide for evidence supporting its existence. While it’s known that many civilizations have come and gone throughout history with or without explanation, modern day Man can only speculate using legends passed down from generation-to-generation, theories pieced together by enthusiasts, archaeological evidence, and channelings from metaphysical sources.
